Exercises To Help You Retain Your Memory - Memory Training

If there were simple ways to boost your memory, would they be of interest to you? Thankfully, lots of methods of protecting your memory and retaining everything you learn exist. The article below has some powerful suggestions to save your memory.

Don?t overload yourself with too much information at one time. Spend several short study sessions learning the information you must remember. Don?t try and learn all there is to learn in one sitting. It can overwhelm your mind, and you can forget nearly all of it. Study in short sessions, and your brain can remember better.

Include fatty Omega-3 acids into your diet to help boost memory capabilities. These fatty acids are present in your brain and adding supplements or fishes to your diet will help your memory. Eat foods that are high in unsaturated fat, like salmon and other fish.

Exercise will help you maintain your memory. When you exercise, the flow of blood and oxygen to the brain is improved, and this keeps your brain healthy. Keeping your body healthy will keep your brain healthy. Improved brain health will help to improve your memory. Exercise has the added advantage of lowering your risk of diseases, like diabetes, which impair memory as a secondary effect.

A helpful tool for increasing your ability to memorize is to link the bits of information together in your mind with a common trait or factor. Connecting pieces of related or non-related information logically together will facilitate recall. For example, if a student is trying to recall the periodic table symbol for lead, he could memorize ?peanut butter (Pb) equals lead.? This association is so off the wall that it is easy to memorize.

Exercise is as good for your memory as it is for your body. Exercise helps to improve your memory, at the same time that it improves your health. In addition, when you are exercising you will increase oxygen flow to the brain, and reduce your risk of developing a disorder. Exercise also enhances the activation of chemicals that are essential for protecting the cells of the brain.

Listening to classical music can help to improve memory function. Music that is calming eases stress, and allows you to focus more clearly on the matter at hand. Try taking a warm bath and lighting some candles, while listening to classical music.

When mastering new information, connect it with something you already know and can access easily. For instance, your birthplace or your mother?s maiden name. This establishes a tie between something you already know to something that is new, and this increases the likelihood that it will be committed to long-term memory. If you relate information, it will help you remember things in a more timely fashion.

Stress can make you forgetful. When you are trying to learn new information or need to recall where an item is located, try to relax. Don?t focus on your frustration, but calmly think of the thing that you are trying to remember.

It can be extremely agitating to find that you can?t remember something. A tip for aiding your memory is clearing your mind for a minute. If searching for something, take a moment to breathe deeply, remove extraneous thoughts, and then start looking with a fresh perspective.

Adapt your diet to meet the nutritional needs of your brain. Healthy fats are important for brain health. Avoid trans fats, but add things like fresh fish, nuts, and flax seed or olive oil to your diet.

Something as simple as doubting yourself can have a huge negative impact on your ability to remember. Many people are resigned to the fact that old age will bring memory loss. This is often a self-fulfilling prophecy. Expecting memory deterioration could potentially damage your memory. When others start doubting your ability to remember things, you may begin to believe them. When you think positive and think you have a good memory then you can help yourself stay positive and sharp.

Do not cram for when studying. Give yourself plenty of breaks. The study style of cramming makes information recall exceptionally difficult during the test time, since you cut your brain short of badly needed processing time. Don?t overdo the break, though. Make sure that you don?t take so many breaks that you don?t leave yourself time for proper review. It is therefore important that you allow a decent amount of time before a test to study, rather than trying to cram it all in just before.

Improving Memory-saving tips and tactics aren?t overly complicated. Most of what you learned here is all fairly common-sense stuff, dealing with a lot of repetition and other retention practices. However, you cannot take this advice lightly just because it?s simpler than you assumed. Be sure that you?re using the tips here if you want to save your memory.

Can a Teddy Bear Save Your Child from Hell?

Listen, brother: If you don?t want your children to roast forever in hell, you should buy this teddy bear from John Hagee ministries.

That was the message of a product commercial that Matthew Paul Turner noted recently on his blog. ?You?ll have to take my word for it, since the commercial has since vanished from the interwebs. ?But you can see a basic ad for Barnabas, the Bible Bear, sans John Hagee, here. ?Barnabas is a ?soft, cuddly companion? that quotes nine Bible verses. ?The video shows a little girl who is sweetly addicted to squeezing all the biblical wisdom out of this poor talking bear.

YouTube Preview Image

Since Matthew Paul Turner was snarking about the bear, and since I?m a contrarian, I was prepared to counter-snark. ?I don?t find the bear ?creepy,? as MPT did. ?But I did find the advertisement strategy rather loathsome. ?It was just about that stark: You don?t want your kids burning in hell, right? God has made you responsible to deliver them from the hands of Lucifer. ?Ergo, you should buy this teddy bear, which by the way my son Matthew Hagee helped develop, and which also brings money into John Hagee ministries through our online store. ?If you don?t buy this bear, then you just may be falling short in your obligation to save your kids from hell. ?Perhaps the Hagees reconsidered their hellfire-missile marketing strategy and that?s why they removed the video. ?If so, good for them.

This is all a very, very pointed way of bringing up a question I?ve been mulling recently, and a question I intend to address in a series of posts here in the coming weeks. ?I?ll frame the question in more nuanced ways as the series goes along. ?Even now, my savvier readers will find themselves crying out for distinctions. ?The distinctions will come. ?But let me start by putting it broadly:

What is the value of Christian culture?

It?s become popular in more fashionable evangelical circles to cheer the demise of American cultural Christendom. ?Gabe Lyons (whom I like) proclaims ?The Good News About the End of Christian America.? ?The assertion seems to be that the collapse of ?Christian America? will clear the way for a more pristine Christian community and confession ? one that would, in the words of World Vision?s Richard Stearns, be more ?authentic,? more ?back to basics.? ?We could stop fighting over the Ten Commandments at courthouses and manger scenes in city parks, and instead focus on, you know, serving the least of these and living lives in the imitation of Christ. ?It?s a festival and false dichotomies in a carnival of caricatures, but here?s what Stearns says:

There was a time when Pastor Curry might have worried about things like posting the Ten Commandments in courtrooms, but today he?s too busy changing the city of Tacoma and world. This is the work Christians are called to do. Christians can stop worrying about the symbols of the decline of Christian America and get back to the mission Jesus gave us to show the world a different way to live ? a way that demonstrates the great character of God: his love, his justice, his compassion, his forgiveness and his reconciliation.

It all sounds so patently obvious, doesn?t it? ?So obvious that you wonder how anyone could possibly disagree. ?Stop fighting for political power. ?Stop scrambling to protect the vestigia of Christian culture. ?Stop worrying so much. ?(Hey man,) They?re only symbols. ?Focus on the substance of Jesus? mission. ?Just love the world.

It?s at this point that I find the slow bilious burn of skepticism rising up in my throat. ?Aren?t symbols important? ?Don?t they remind us of important truths? ?Don?t they, at least potentially, have a leavening effect upon the culture? ?And aren?t we talking about more than mere symbols anyway? ?Aren?t we talking about a whole set of assumptions and ideals about the true, the good and the beautiful? ?While a cultural hegemony can certainly be abused, and may be gone for good, aren?t there things to be said for a cultural pervasiveness, for sowing seeds of divine truth and goodness and beauty into the culture? ??Christian America? can mean, after all, about a thousand different things.

In my thirty-six years, I?ve lived in/around the San Francisco Bay Area, in Princeton, in Cambridge/Boston and now in Atlanta. ?I was prepared to find the ?Christian culture? of the South off-putting. ?I expected to find it superficial, artificial, hypocritical. ?But that?s not really what I found. ?I?m sure it?s out there. ?I expected to find lots of plastic-grin men and big-haired women for whom being ?Christian? was all about listening to Steven Curtis Chapman, reading Karen Kingsbury and plastering Thomas Kinkade on every wall. ?Instead I?ve found a lot of people who are deeply earnest about their faith and willing to make dramatic sacrifices for it. ?And if they have Christian kitsch on the walls it?s because they want to remind themselves of the truths they hold dear.

So I?m left with a question I intend to address in a series of thought experiments here: What value Christian culture? ?What can we really expect to happen to our society if it?s increasingly uprooted from the classical Judeo-Christian cultural inheritance? ?What if it would actually be unloving in the extreme to evacuate the culture of Christian symbols, to dilute the pervasiveness of Christian cultural assumptions? ?Or, to put it more pointedly, while I abhor the way in which Barnabas was advertised, is there a place for Bible Bears?

Keep your Feet Healthy and Happy | Best Self Magazine | Atlanta GA

By Sarah E. King

These days, we all lead demanding and active lives. In a single outing, we can run to the store, pick up the dry cleaning, spend a few hours at the office, throw in a workout, stand in line at the bank and take the dog for a walk. We are constantly on the go, and always on our feet, ready to tackle the next errand or take on the next "to-do."

But have you ever stopped to think about the intricate and biological wonder that has taken you to all those places? Your feet. Made up of 52 bones and more than 100 ligaments, tendons and muscles all working together, this crucial part of your body works hard to keep you on the move. When was the last time you took into account how much your feet affect your lifestyle, and for that matter, how much your lifestyle affects your feet?

"The foot is the most complicated part of the body, but the most neglected by most people," says Raymond Margiano, Ph.D., founder and CEO of Foot Solutions, Inc., which focuses on providing a line of shoes, arch supports and foot care accessories. "A lot of people don't understand it, but the feet are the foundation of your body, similar to the foundation of a building. Over time, you start seeing stress cracks in the foundation, and the building starts to lean. The foundation of your body is critical to your alignment; everything above your feet needs that solid support."

Margiano, who has been in the footwear and pedorthic industry for more than 20 years, is not alone in his opinion. Dr. Carl Kihm, podiatric physician and surgeon with Village Podiatry Centers, says we oftentimes take our feet for granted until we experience an ongoing problem that is painful or debilitating.

"Our feet are our foundation and they allow us to be mobile and live," Dr. Kihm says. "If the bones and joints of your foot and/or ankle are in poor condition, this can affect your posture, pace, the pressure distribution and time spent on each foot while walking, which can ultimately lead to knee, hip and back pains."

Dr. Kihm, who sees patients at Village Podiatry Center's Marietta-Kennestone and Douglasville offices, says early assessment and treatment is the optimal way to keep your feet healthy. "Do not ignore your feet. If they hurt, you should listen to your body and you should not try to deal with the pain," he says. "Consider which factors make them feel worse and avoid these."

Clearly, paying attention to your feet and what your body is telling you are the first steps in obtaining happy and healthy feet. But what are we dealing with here? And what do we do to tackle common foot problems?

The Usual Suspects

Dr. David Scott of Resurgens Orthopaedics, who specializes in foot and ankle issues as well as trauma and knee surgeries, puts foot health into simple terms. "When you don't take care of your feet, they hurt, and you don't get to do what you like to do," he says. "Take care of your feet, and you get a lifetime of foot health and wellness." However, despite the straightforward advice, 10 to 20 percent of people have some kind of recurring or chronic foot problem. Here are a few of the more common ailments:

Bunions:

A bunion is a condition where the big toe gradually dislocates, and can get more severe and painful over time. This condition is caused by the bone structure of your feet, which is hereditary. Dr. Kihm says some shoes can make the condition more painful, but shoes are not the cause of bunions.

Treatment: "Wide-toed shoes and padding may be helpful to reduce this kind of pain," Dr. Kihm says. "However, because bunions are a bone condition, sometimes, surgery is required to address and correct the bony etiology and painful deformity."

Hammertoe:

A hammertoe is a deformity of the second, third or fourth toes, in which the toe is bent at the middle joint. If left untreated, a hammertoe may become fixed and require surgery.

Treatment: "Everything in your body has some kind of balance, such as the bicep and the tricep in your arm," Dr. Scott says. "The hammertoe is a sort of imbalance in the toe where the first knuckle is bent up and the second knuckle gets bent down." Dr. Scott says a hammertoe can be surgically straightened by removing the knuckle and lengthening the tendons. The knuckle is then fused straight. "You have to balance all of the joints to correct the hammertoe," he says. Dr. Scott also says forefoot problems in the ball of your foot may be the result of tight calf muscles. "When your calf muscle is tight, it puts more pressure on the ball of your foot when you walk," he says. "People who experience bunions and hammertoes should have their calf muscles checked, and if tight and causing more pressure on the ball of your foot, they should be lengthened during surgery."

Corns:

Corns are pressure-induced callus formations on the toes. Dr. Kihm says each patient is assessed individually to determine why these are occurring.

Treatment: "Your podiatrist can usually trim your corn and this can allow for an immediate relief of pain," he says. "If your shoes are too tight or if you have hammertoes associated with these corns, these can be causative factors that need to be addressed to prevent the corns from returning." Padding around the toes can also reduce the pressures that create corns. However, Dr. Kihm says he cautions people with poor sensation, especially diabetic patients, not to use medicated corn pads. "These contain salicylic acid that dissolves away the corn, but can also dissolve away healthy skin and create wounds and more severe problems."

Plantar fasciitis:

Plantar fasciitis occurs when the strong band of tissue that supports the arch of your foot becomes irritated and inflamed. The bottom of the heel becomes tender and sore. Dr. Scott says there are many factors that cause plantar fasciitis. "The aging of the tendon and the stress we put on it in day-to-day life is one factor," he says. "We are also heavier than we should be, and not as athletic as we should be." Dr. Scott says while sometimes there is an event where you may injure your heel, very frequently, there is not one factor to put your finger on.

Treatment: "Given enough time, plantar fasciitis will actually go away, but you can do things to speed it up," Dr. Scott says. Maintaining a healthy body weight, stretching the upper calf muscle, wearing good footwear or anti-inflammatory medications are all possible forms of treatment. "Ninety-five percent of heel pain, however, gets better with stretching," he says.

Ingrown Nails:

An ingrown nail occurs when the side of the nail grows into the skin. When left untreated, the irritated nail can create infection. Causes include footwear that crowds the toes, not properly cutting the nail or toenail injury.

Treatment: Dr. Kihm says to prevent ingrown nails, avoid cutting your nails too short and do not cut them on a sharp curvature. If you develop an ingrown nail, see your podiatrist for treatment; an in-office procedure is oftentimes performed, which can remove the ingrown nail and prevent it from returning.

If the Shoe Fits...

Certain aches and pains can be avoided by simply paying attention to the shoes you put on your feet. Margiano says most foot problems are caused or aggravated by wearing ill-fitted shoes. "Ninety percent of people are not wearing properly fitted shoes... you want to wear shoes like the shape of your foot, with room and support for walking or running," he says. "Your foot takes the impact if you're not supporting it properly."

For women, the daily use of high-heels is a major culprit in foot pain. "Women will have five times more issues with their feet than men, and the main reason is the female tendency to wear shoes more for appearance than for comfort," Margiano says.

For a woman to avoid issues due to high-heels, Margiano suggests not wearing heels higher than 1.5 to 2 inches, as well as wearing high-heels in moderation. "You don't want to force your feet into this awkward position," he says. "Heels slam those toes into a narrow wedge, and are the leading cause for bunions and hammertoes."

But men aren't free from shoe discomfort either. According to Dr. Kihm, men are five times more likely to have a traumatic fracture of their heel bone than women. "These kinds of injuries are usually experienced when jumping or falling from a height, and since men, for example, work more frequently on roofs, this makes sense."

Dr. Scott says men also are more prone to overuse and sports-related injuries, and injuries among his male and female patients are equal. However, women still take the brunt of footwear-related pain. "I see two or three women patients for every male," he says. "Women are in for more shoe-related issues due to restrictive footwear, and I see more foot and ankle issues with women."

Flip-flops and ballet flats, which offer little arch support, are also a concern for health care professionals. Margiano says there are many foot injuries that result from the foot not being supported, like fallen arches. "Your foot, overtime, will collapse, and being flat footed puts more pressure on your ankle and knees," Margiano says. "You can purchase custom inserts for flats or heels to support the arch... a lot of things can be done for fashionable footwear. When you put in an insert, your foot feels better and feels more supported."

Dr. Kihm says there are many different reasons for fallen arches, and some may have more to do with heredity. "If this problem is noted in children, or since childhood, this typically reflects the patient's inherited bone structure of the arch of his or her feet," he says. "When this problem arises in adulthood, the cause can be the result of tendon damage and dysfunction. We commonly see this in older and overweight females, and it commonly only involves one foot at a time."

For an inherited or developed issue, Dr. Kihm suggests wearing supportive sneakers with rigid arch supports to help prevent or treat these conditions. However, when pain, fatigue or weakness is associated with fallen arches, Dr. Kihm warns that you should report for a physical exam, as these conditions may get worse with time.

Put Your Best Foot Forward

Understanding the steps to take in addressing foot problems will help put you on the right track for a healthier lifestyle. And taking care of your feet can be a simple process. Dr. Scott offers this final advice:

"Keep your weight near your ideal range, pick your activities carefully. When you change activities, you should change it in a gradual way so your feet don't fracture or break. Wear comfortable shoes," he says. "Also, calf stretching and a flexibility routine are important. Those who have stayed flexible as they age tend to do better. Flexibility should be a long-term part of everyone's fitness goals."

Having the right footwear is crucial to maintaining healthy feet. But we don't think about it as much as we should. According to Dr. Kihm, the pressure on your feet exceeds your bodyweight when walking, and can reach four times your body weight when running. "We don't think about this a lot and maybe we 'put up' with our feet being sore or painful," he says. "It should not be this way and it does not need to be. Proper footwear is very important so you can support and protect your feet as they function."

The Right Support

Hiking Boots

Bubba Sloan, co-founder of High Country Outfitters, knows his way around a hiking boot. Sloan says, when it comes to footwear, making sure you have the proper fit is important. "If there was one shoe on the market that I think would fit everyone, I'd sell one shoe," he says. To find the right boot keep these tips in mind:

  • The sole: You need sturdiness in the sole of the boot so the foot stays in a stable position. Boots which cover the ankle are not meant to prevent rolling your ankle, but to protect from rocks or other abuses on the trail.
  • Socks: Merino wool lets the foot breath and doesn't cause temperatures to rise in the boot like synthetic socks.
  • Boots: A light weight, waterproof boot is a good starting point for new hikers.

Heels

For those who wear heels on a daily basis, it's no surprise to hear that high heels cause a range of foot problems.

  • Dr. Kihm: "High heels change the forces on the foot as they shift the pressure to the front of the foot. They also have a narrow toe box, which crams the toes together, and can cause corns and calluses, or make bunions more painful."
  • Dr. Scott: "It's common sense and we all know it, but we like fashion. You'd rather look good than feel good sometimes. Shoes that are wide enough for your feet, with good thick bottoms, and don't constrict the bone are ideal. Fashion footwear is tight, and doesn't fit how the human foot was made... very few people can wear high heels when they're older."

Advanced breast cancer edges up in younger women - seattlepi.com

CHICAGO (AP) ? Advanced breast cancer has increased slightly among young women, a 34-year analysis suggests. The disease is still uncommon among women younger than 40, and the small change has experts scratching their heads about possible reasons.

The results are potentially worrisome because young women's tumors tend to be more aggressive than older women's, and they're much less likely to get routine screening for the disease.

Still, that doesn't explain why there'd be an increase in advanced cases and the researchers and other experts say more work is needed to find answers.

It's likely that the increase has more than one cause, said Dr. Rebecca Johnson, the study's lead author and medical director of a teen and young adult cancer program at Seattle Children's Hospital.

"The change might be due to some sort of modifiable risk factor, like a lifestyle change" or exposure to some sort of cancer-linked substance, she said.

Johnson said the results translate to about 250 advanced cases diagnosed in women younger than 40 in the mid-1970s versus more than 800 in 2009. During those years, the number of women nationwide in that age range went from about 22 million to closer to 30 million ? an increase that explains part of the study trend "but definitely not all of it," Johnson said.

Other experts said women delaying pregnancy might be a factor, partly because getting pregnant at an older age might cause an already growing tumor to spread more quickly in response to pregnancy hormones.

Obesity and having at least a drink or two daily have both been linked with breast cancer but research is inconclusive on other possible risk factors, including tobacco and chemicals in the environment. Whether any of these explains the slight increase in advanced disease in young women is unknown.

There was no increase in cancer at other stages in young women. There also was no increase in advanced disease among women older than 40.

Overall U.S. breast cancer rates have mostly fallen in more recent years, although there are signs they may have plateaued.

Some 17 years ago, Johnson was diagnosed with early-stage breast cancer at age 27, and that influenced her career choice to focus on the disease in younger women.

"Young women and their doctors need to understand that it can happen in young women," and get checked if symptoms appear, said Johnson, now 44. "People shouldn't just watch and wait."

The authors reviewed a U.S. government database of cancer cases from 1976 to 2009. They found that among women aged 25 to 39, breast cancer that has spread to distant parts of the body ? advanced disease ? increased from between 1 and 2 cases per 100,000 women to about 3 cases per 100,000 during that time span.

The study was published Tuesday in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

About one in 8 women will develop breast cancer in their lifetime, but only 1 in 173 will develop it by age 40. Risks increase with age and certain gene variations can raise the odds.

Routine screening with mammograms is recommended for older women but not those younger than 40.

Dr. Len Lichtenfeld, the American Cancer Society's deputy chief medical officer, said the results support anecdotal reports but that there's no reason to start screening all younger women since breast cancer is still so uncommon for them.

He said the study "is solid and interesting and certainly does raise questions as to why this is being observed." One of the most likely reasons is probably related to changes in childbearing practices, he said, adding that the trend "is clearly something to be followed."

Dr. Ann Partridge, chair of the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's advisory committee on breast cancer in young women, agreed but said it's also possible that doctors look harder for advanced disease in younger women than in older patients. More research is needed to make sure the phenomenon is real, said Partridge, director of the breast cancer center at the Harvard-affiliated Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.

The study shouldn't cause alarm, she said. Still, Partridge said young women should be familiar with their breasts and see the doctor if they notice any lumps or other changes.

Software engineer Stephanie Carson discovered a large breast tumor that had already spread to her lungs; that diagnosis in 2003 was a huge shock.

"I was so clueless," she said. "I was just 29 and that was the last thing on my mind."

Carson, who lives near St. Louis, had a mastectomy, chemotherapy, radiation and other treatments and she frequently has to try new drugs to keep the cancer at bay.

Because most breast cancer is diagnosed in early stages, there's a misconception that women are treated, and then get on with their lives, Carson said. She and her husband had to abandon hopes of having children, and she's on medical leave from her job.

"It changed the complete course of my life," she said. "But it's still a good life."

Wall St cash bonuses seen up in 2012 - NY comptroller

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Wall Street cash bonuses are forecast to have risen in 2012 to their highest since 2010, but are still below pre-crisis levels, New York state's comptroller said on Tuesday.

The securities industry's bonus pool was expected to total $20 billion, Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli said at a press conference on Tuesday, up 8 percent from 2011 but below levels seen in 2006 and 2007, before the financial crisis.

The estimate is based on income tax withholdings and would include bonuses that were deferred from earlier years. The comptroller's office compiles estimates on Wall Street bonuses because of their importance to state and city tax revenues.

The rise in bonuses comes as profits for broker-dealer operations on New York Stock Exchange member firms was $23.9 billion in 2012, three times the $7.7 billion earned in 2011, and one of the most profitable years on record, the report said.

"As we all know and acknowledge the securities industry in New York City is a major driver of the city and state economy," said DiNapoli. "It's no secret that if Wall Street is strong all New Yorkers benefit."

The securities industry on Wall Street and beyond is still going through a period of major change after the 2007-2008 financial crisis, with increased oversight from regulators. The industry has far fewer employees and is changing it compensation practices to include more deferred bonuses.

Morgan Stanley is taking three years to pay out 2012 bonuses to high-earning employees, three sources familiar with the situation told Reuters in January, a step that will better align incentives with shareholder interests and make it harder for employees to leave.

DiNapoli said he expects Wall Street to continue to cut jobs in 2013. Employment totaled 169,700 in December 2012, 1,000 fewer than the year before, according to the report. The securities industry in New York has regained only about 30 percent of the 28,300 jobs it lost during the crisis.

"I think we're still in a recovery mode," said Joe Sorrentino, a managing director at Steven Hall & Partners, a compensation consultant to Wall Street firms. "In essence, all they are saying is that things are better than in 2011. That doesn't sound too confident to me."

Still, the report was another sign the industry is stabilizing after the ravages of the crisis.

Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation said earlier that the banking industry's full-year earnings were the second-highest on record at $141.3 billion, an increase over 2011 of $22.9 billion, or 19.3 percent. Bank earnings peaked in 2006 at $145.2 billion.

Much of the earnings growth in 2012 came from banks reducing the amount they set aside for losses on loans, the FDIC said. Banks also saw gains on loan sales and higher servicing income.

The average cash bonus rose an estimated 9 percent to almost $121,900 in 2012, the comptroller said. The average bonus rose more than the overall pool because the pool was shared among fewer workers than in 2011.

"The industry is still adjusting to the current economic and regulatory environment, working through the fall out of the financial crisis," said DiNapoli. "The industry continues to announce layoffs and will likely continue to restructure."

In 2012, about 14 percent of New York State tax revenue came from Wall Street, down from 20 percent before the financial crisis, while the industry's contribution to New York City's tax fell from a peak of more than 12 percent to less than 7 percent.

The comptroller's estimate does not include stock options or other forms of deferred compensation.

TokBox?s WebRTC-Based Video Chat Platform Now Supports Firefox Nightly And Aurora

tokbox_firefox_logoTokBox, the live video-chat platform that was acquired by Spain’s Telef?nica in 2012, was one of the first companies to fully bet on WebRTC (the Web Real-Time Communication API), the quickly developing standard for plugin-free, in-browser video, audio and text chat. After launching its Chrome integration earlier this year, TokBox today debuted its support for Mozilla’s Firefox, starting with the bleeding-edge Aurora and Nightly editions of the popular browser. Now that TokBox supports Firefox, developers using its WebRTC-based?OpenTok platform can write video-enabled apps that allow for chats between users on iOS, Chrome and Firefox. With WebRTC now being part of Firefox’s early-release?versions, users can expect to see it in the stable version of Firefox somewhere around version 21 or 22 (the stable channel is currently on version 19). As TokBox CEO Ian Small told me last week, his company started working with Mozilla around last November. His team received early access to Mozilla’s WebRTC implementations and worked closely with the team there as Mozilla stabilized its own implementations of the standard. TokBox’s OpenTok platform ensures that developers don’t have to worry about the different WebRTC implementations on different browsers. The platform will also provide numerous additional services that a native WebRTC app doesn’t provide, including, for example, broadcasting to a large group of viewers and video recording. OpenTok, the company says, is currently being used by more than 70,000 organizations, including the likes of Major League Baseball, Ford, Bridgestone and the remote presence startup Double Robotics. “Between Firefox 21 and Chrome 25,” Small told me, “we now have what appears to be a reasonably stable interop situation.” WebRTC, he argued, is still “in its infancy.” The native version in the browser can be used to connect two people, but the standard doesn’t offer features like letting developers connect more than two people at a time or even record sessions. Based on TokBox’s experience with WebRTC, Small also believes that the spec should accommodate alternative video codecs besides the Google-backed VP8 format. In addition, he argues that bandwidth allocation, which would allow apps to devote more bandwidth to the speaker, for example, should be part of the standard. Despite these issues, however, Small believes that WebRTC will see “serious pickup” in the second half of this year, especially now that most of the key mobile and desktop platforms support it.

NVIDIA Tegra 4i Phoenix reference phone hands-on (video)

NVIDIA Tegra 4i Phoenix reference phone handson video

NVIDIA's latest venture in the mobile world, called the 4i, was introduced last week ahead of Mobile World Congress, and fortunately the chipset maker brought the product to Barcelona embedded in a reference phone known as "Phoenix." The 8mm-thick handset, which will find a home in the labs of manufacturers and carriers (as well as the desks of many third-party devs), sports a 5-inch 1080p display, 13MP rear-facing camera, PRISM 2, Chimera, DirectTouch and LTE (we're told that most major bands are included for testing purposes). As it's not geared for general consumer use, so it's not the thinnest, sleekest or best-looking device, and the back doesn't even seem to snap completely shut. Units are being sampled as we speak, and we should expect to see devices hit the market in nine to twelve months. Since it's still pretty early in the process, we weren't able to turn on the phone or benchmark the chipset; the only exception to this rule, as you'll see in the video, was when a rep showed a gaming demo on his particular unit.

While the 4i is the smaller brother of the Tegra 4 family, it's still expected to be quite powerful. The chip, which is designed specifically for smartphones (tablets will take advantage of Tegra 4 instead), features four 28nm Cortex-A9 r4 (beefed-up from the standard A9) cores that can be clocked up to 2.3GHz, 60 GPU cores (compared to 72 on the T4) and an integrated i500 LTE baseband modem. For additional comparison, NVIDIA showed us the two sibling boards side-by-side. Head below to check out our galleries of Phoenix and the two chipsets, as well as a brief video that shows off the graphics prowess of the 4i.

Acer intros its first Android-based all-in-one, the Smart Display DA220HQL (hands-on)

Acer intros its first Androidpowered monitor, the Smart Display DA220HQL

Android-powered monitors / all-in-ones aren't exactly a novel concept, but it's definitely a new frontier for Acer. The company is just dipping its toes into the space with the Smart Display DA220HQL, which it's showing off here at Mobile World Congress. If you've never heard of such a thing, Acer is hoping you'll use as a kitchen PC, or as an external monitor for keeping an eye on things like email.

The 21.5-inch, 250-nit, 1080p panel makes use of VA technology (like some other Acer monitors, actually), which provides viewing angles on par with IPS. Which is to say, they're wide, and colors stay vibrant regardless of whether you're standing off to the side or you've got the screen pushed down at a near-flat angle. As far as connectivity goes, you've got three USB ports, as well as micro-HDMI for hooking this up to your PC. There's also an Ethernet jack, a microSD slot supporting 32GB cards and a 1.2MP front-facing camera if you want to use Skype or some other app for video calls.

As you can see in the gallery and in that main shot up there, this is mostly clean Android, which isn't a surprise since Acer isn't known for saddling its tablets and phones with heavy skins. Still, like recent Iconia Tabs we've tested, it has the Acer Ring UI for quickly launching apps. Even then, it's easy enough to ignore if you're not into it. On the inside, you've got a dual-core 1GHz TI OMAP 4428 CPU and 8GB 1GB of RAM to keep performance hopping, which is plenty -- this is, after all, a mobile OS we're talking about, even if it does live inside what appears to be an all-in-one PC.

Other design notes: that speaker grille up front has a funky circular pattern, which we're not really digging. But hey, to each his own. We do appreciate the relatively narrow bezel, though the backside and front face have a few too many glossy bits. Even so, it's a nicer design than what ViewSonic had to show at CES. (Besides, how many people are going to see your monitor's rear end anyway?) As far as availability goes, we so far know this will hit Europe in March for 399 euro. It's said to be US-bound, too, though no word on pricing. For now, we've got some hands-on shots below for your viewing pleasure.

Update: That's 1GB of RAM and 8GB of ROM. Sorry for the confusion, folks!

Microsoft says small number of its computers hacked

US-MICROSOFT-HACK:Microsoft says small number of its computers hacked

SEATTLE (Reuters) - Microsoft Corp said on Friday a small number of its computers, including some in its Mac software business unit, were infected with malware, but there was no evidence of customer data being affected and it is continuing its investigation.

The world's largest software company said the security intrusion was "similar" to recent ones reported by Apple Inc and Facebook Inc.

The incident, reported on one of the company's public blogs happened "recently", but Microsoft said it chose not to make any statement publicly while it gathered information about the attack.

"This type of cyberattack is no surprise to Microsoft and other companies that must grapple with determined and persistent adversaries," said Matt Thomlinson, general manager of Trustworthy Computing Security at Microsoft, in the company's blog post.

Over the past week or so, both Apple and Facebook said computers used by employees were attacked after visiting a software developer website infected with malicious software.

The attacks come at a time of broader concern about computer security.

Newspaper websites, including those of The New York Times, The Washington Post and The Wall Street Journal, have been infiltrated recently. Earlier this month U.S. President Barack Obama issued an executive order seeking better protection of the country's critical infrastructure from cyber attacks.

Two Chinese liquor giants fined for price fixing

Beijing News.Net Saturday 23rd February, 2013

The Guizhou-based Moutai and Sichuan-based Wu Liangye were ordered to pay 247 and 202 million yuan in fines, respectively, according to statements from price regulators Friday.

It marked the harshest fines since the implementation of China's anti-monopoly laws in 2008, reported Xinhua.

The statements said that the companies had restricted the lowest prices on its liquor products for resale at their distributors, with whom they had made vertical monopoly agreements.

The punishments have shown that the government makes no exception for any company when handling antitrust cases, as the two businesses that were fined are both state-owned, said Wang Xiaoye, a professor at Graduate School of Chinese Academy of Social Sciences.

But the fines were relatively light, Wang said, citing that they only accounted for 1 percent of the total revenue the two companies recorded last year. The figure can reach as high as 10 percent according to Chinese anti-monopoly laws.

The punishment added to the plight of the two liquor giants, as a recent government frugality campaign is expected to have a sizeable impact on sales of their products, which mainly target high-end consumers.

The penalties follow similar fines to Samsung, LG and four Taiwanese LED makers in January.

The mystery above: Military's X-37B mission

ULA

An Atlas 5 rocket blasts off on Dec. 11, 2012, beginning the Air Force's third X-37B classified space plane mission.

By Leonard David
Space.com

The U.S. Air Force's mysterious X-37B space plane is quietly chalking up mileage in space more than two months after its latest launch into orbit.

The robotic?X-37B space plane?soared into orbit atop an Atlas 5 rocket from Florida's Cape Canaveral Air Force Station on Dec. 11. The mini-shuttle's mission is known as Orbital Test Vehicle-3 (OTV-3), since it is the third classified mission under the Air Force's X-37B program.

How long OTV-3 will remain in Earth orbit is unknown. The hush-hush?space plane?mission is officially on Air Force space tracking books as USA-240.

"The mission is ongoing," Air Force Maj. Eric Badger, a spokesman for the X-37B program, told Space.com. "As with previous missions, the actual duration will depend on test objectives, on-orbit vehicle performance and conditions at the landing facility." [Photos: U.S. Military's X-37B Space Plane]

NASA / MSFC

NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center image shows on-orbit functions for the reusable X-37 space plane, now under the wing of the U.S. Air Force.

A new reusable space plane
The current flight under way has attained one known major milestone ? that of reusability.

This same vehicle was flown on the maiden voyage in the X-37B program back in 2010. That OTV-1 mission lasted nearly 225 days in orbit and then zoomed back to Earth on autopilot over the Pacific Ocean, gliding down onto a specially prepared runway at Vandenberg Air Force Base in California.

The OTV-2 mission, which used a different X-37B vehicle, also made a Vandenberg touchdown on June 16 of last year after remaining in orbit for 469 days, more than doubling its sister ship?s stay.

There's a possibility that OTV-3 may not land in Vandenberg. There have been discussions about bringing the space plane down at the space shuttle landing strip at NASA's?Kennedy Space Center, next door to Cape Canaveral, as a possible cost-cutting measure.

"The possibility of using the former shuttle infrastructure for future X-37B landing operations is still being investigated," Badger said.

Boeing

Stretching 29 feet in length and weighing 11,000 pounds, the second Boeing-built X-37B became the longest on-orbit space vehicle on June 16, 2012 when it completed a 469-day mission with an autonomous landing at Vandenberg Air Force Station in California.

Space test platform
The X-37B looks a bit like a miniature?space shuttle. The vehicle is 29 feet (8.8 meters) long and 15 feet (4.5 m) wide, with a payload bay about the size of a pickup truck bed.

Only two X-37B space planes have been constructed for the Air Force by Boeing Government Space Systems, officials say. Flights of the space plane are conducted under the auspices of the Air Force?s Rapid Capabilities Office.

According to an Air Force fact sheet, the Rapid Capabilities Office is working on the X-37B Orbital Test Vehicle "to demonstrate a reliable, reusable, unmanned space test platform for the United States Air Force."

Mission control is handled by the 3rd Space Experimentation Squadron, 21st Space Wing, of the Air Force Space Command in Colorado Springs, Colo.

Skywatcher insight
While little is known regarding what OTV-3 is toting in its cargo bay, amateur skywatchers offer some insight into the mission.

"All does seem quiet," said Ted Molczan of Toronto, a leader in an ever-vigilant, worldwide satellite sleuthing network.

"OTV-3 remains in its initial orbit, maintaining altitude with periodic engine firings," Molczan told Space.com. "Unlike the first two missions, its ground track does not closely repeat at the frequent intervals that would suggest an imaging reconnaissance mission."

Confusion and speculation
While missions of X-37B remain obscure, the Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS), headquartered in Cambridge, Mass., criticizes the program as a less-than-cost-effective way to conduct space activities.

UCS space experts assert that, while the space plane is versatile and capable, there are better, more efficient and more cost-effective ways of carrying out the X-37B's possible missions.

"And because it is an Air Force project and its details are classified, the plane has generated confusion, speculation and, in some cases, concern about its actual purpose" a UCS document issued prior to the OTV-3 mission launch said.

Manhunt underway for suspects in fatal Las Vegas strip shooting

(Reuters) - A multi-state manhunt was under way on Friday for the men who shot dead an aspiring rapper as he drove on the Las Vegas Strip in a Maserati, touching off a fiery crash that killed a cab driver and his passenger.

Las Vegas police have not named any suspects in the dramatic pre-dawn shooting in the heart of the desert resort city on Thursday, but said they were still hunting for a black Range Rover used in the incident.

One or more gunmen in the apparently brand-new luxury sport utility vehicle opened fire on a silver Maserati being driven by 27-year-old Kenneth Wayne Cherry Jr. at the busy intersection of Las Vegas Boulevard and Flamingo Road.

Cherry, who performed under the name "Kenny Clutch," was slain and his car veered out of control before smashing into a taxicab. Killed in the cab were driver Michael Bolden, 62, and a passenger who has not been identified by authorities.

Las Vegas television station KTNV reported that the taxi passenger killed in the incident was identified by her family as Sandi Sutton, a Washington state woman who worked for a Seattle-area chamber of commerce.

The gunfire and collision in the busy intersection near the Bellagio and Caesars Palace hotels triggered another crash involving four other vehicles. At least four people were hurt.

"As you can imagine our detectives are working non-stop," Las Vegas Metropolitan Police spokesman Officer Jose Hernandez said. "There's lots of information coming in, lots of leads being generated that we're sifting through, and our investigation is moving forward."

Hernandez said Las Vegas police had asked authorities in neighboring states to assist in the manhunt and to be on the lookout for the black Range Rover, which was described as carrying paper dealer plates.

He said a passenger in Cherry's car, who suffered a minor injury, had spoken to police.

Clark County Sheriff Doug Gillespie told a Thursday news conference that the shooting may have stemmed from an altercation between Cherry and the suspects in the valet area of the Aria Resort and Casino on the Strip.

Hernandez declined to elaborate on that incident, saying that it was part of the ongoing investigation.

Attorney Vicki Greco, who has represented Cherry for what she described as minor traffic issues and in a civil case, told Reuters that his family was "devastated."

"I can tell you this, the world has lost a good man," Cherry's aunt, Pat Sims, told the San Jose Mercury News for a story on its website.

"I'm not saying he didn't have his faults, but he was very kind, especially to older people," Sims, 75, told the paper. "Whatever happened in Vegas, I don't know about, but he was a very kind soul."

The incident occurred less than a mile from where rapper Tupac Shakur was shot in September 1996 while riding in a BMW with Death Row Records co-founder Marion "Suge" Knight after the two men had attended a Mike Tyson boxing match.

Shakur, 25, was hit by gunfire from at least one assailant in a Cadillac while sitting in Knight's car at the intersection of Flamingo Road and Koval Lane and died six days later at a hospital. His murder remains unsolved.
